ABSTRACT

The most striking differences between New York and London are the number of hate offences recorded by the police, and the number of police officers (and specialist units) dedicated to the investigation of hate crimes. In this chapter I shall explore the policing of hate crime in London, drawing again from my own ongoing research. Rather than presenting a critique, this chapter will be predominantly descriptive of the policing approach to hate crimes adopted in London over the past five years or so. This will allow for a comparison with the approaches of New York and Philadelphia that were discussed in the last chapter, and provide the context for a critique in the next chapter.
