ABSTRACT

Every day of our lives, new words are being introduced into our language and, with modern methods of communication, many are quickly absorbed into our everyday speech and writing. Most are reinventions or rearrangements of other words - streetwise, edutainment, end-user - which have been compounded together in a fascinating and never-ending word game. There are scientific and technological terms, fashionable words promoted by show-business celebrities and street language and slang. There is also a craze for new verbs, readily manufactured to streamline our journey along the information highway. Working with new words will increase children's confidence and self-esteem as they witness the way their language is constantly being modified, developed and reinvented.
