ABSTRACT

Since the late 1980s, there has been a substantial increase in the use of managementorientated procurement systems in the UK, mainly as a result of clients, particularly those in the commercial sector, demanding earlier starts on site and a shorter overall project duration than could be achieved using conventional methods. They have also demanded more control over project costs and higher standards of functionality and quality than have been obtained previously by other means of building procurement. There are two main forms of ‘overlapping’ procurement in use in the UK:

a management contracting b construction management.
