ABSTRACT

Kim Il Sung’s death in 1994 transformed North Korea into a hysterical place with the nation’s people expressing uncontrollable sorrow. The elder leader’s death also introduced a newera, one inwhichKim Jong Il no longer had his father’s protection backing him. He was left alone to deal with the nation’s crumbling economy and the international pressure to freeze the North Korean nuclear weapons program. During this period, the state also underwent its biggest crisis since the Korean War – mass starvation.
