ABSTRACT

Each of the following seven chapters examines a different aspect of the prisoners’ culture of resistance. They are described as ‘fields’ of resistance, which implies that each one was a response to a different facet of prison power, and required different resources on the part of prisoners in confronting them. The first field, ‘getting in’, which is explored in this chapter, traces the pathways to political imprisonment for women. It is argued that the experiences of arrest, detention and trial were significant formative influences on women’s awareness of the gendered and political dimensions of imprisonment.
