ABSTRACT

In the last chapter I discussed the idea that social networks constitute important dimensions of social structures. In this chapter I want to address an objection that I believe some will have to this claim, namely that social networks might belong to small-scale ‘micro-structures’ but do not play a significant role at the ‘macrocosm’. In other words, I address what is sometimes referred to as the micro-macro dichotomy. And I offer a relational solution to that problem, thereby completing the relational engagement with sociology’s dichotomies that I began in Chapter 2.
