ABSTRACT

With the focus of the book returning to the conventional regulatory approaches, we now address questions related to their performance. Do they really change urbanisation patterns? Protection of regional open space directly links to the issue of urbanisation, making it one of the dominant planning topics in the developed world. Subsequently, in the United States and many other Western countries urban sprawl and subsequent restricting policies can be considered key planning themes (Bartlett et al., 2000; Romero, 2003; Bae and Richardson, 2004; Gailing, 2005).
