ABSTRACT

I first met John Grieve in 1990. He was assigned the role of Commander (Training), and I was fresh into the world of policing, having come from teaching in further education. His first words to me went something like this: ‘I have no idea about why you are here. You know little about policing, I know little about training. Go and find out what you should be doing, and when you know come and tell me.’ This was to be the start of an enduring relationship.
