ABSTRACT

The ancillary benefits of climate policy usually include the benefits of reduced local air pollution associated with mitigation efforts. Ancillary benefits may render certain actions to mitigate climate change beneficial, but they are related to changes in public goods, and such actions will not be implemented without political intervention. Regardless of the benefits of mitigation, however, the global climate is likely to change in the future. Adaptation will, therefore, also have to take place. The second volume of IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report (IPCC 2007) strongly emphasizes the need to develop adaptation strategies. Adaptation is, however, costly and may not be carried out unless individuals do it autonomously. If political intervention is required, the great uncertainties about climate change may hamper implementation of efficient adaptation strategies. In this context, a documentation of ancillary benefits may be important. The purpose of this chapter is to point out the potential ancillary benefits of a selection of adaptation strategies.
