ABSTRACT

In the past, researchers have intensely analysed the negative impacts of several individual pollutants. In order to prevent the negative effects of pollution, abatement regulations and treaties on a national and international level have been implemented. Prominent examples of international treaties are the Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol, which address the global threats of ozone layer depletion and global warming, respectively. However, in general such agreements impose effects on the environmental system that go far beyond their primary aims. Environmental policies regularly generate unintended co-effects.
