ABSTRACT
An obvious characteristic of early writing is the lack of any clear distinction between words, sentences and text. The writing considered in the previous chapter featured mark-making that progresses gradually towards a random mass of letters, representing the writer’s attempts to communicate meaning. In general, early writing does not yet demonstrate any one-to-one correspondence between the intended message and what appears on the page.
