ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the differences between statistical and mechanical concepts of equilibrium in systems with huge numbers of degrees of freedom.

7.1 Probabilistic models Once we know the possible outcomes of a situation it is natural to consider how probable each of those outcomes are. The probability of an event is a number in the interval 0 to 1, where 0 represents an impossible event and 1 a certain event.
