ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the individual education plans of Ben and Chelsea. Ben is a 7-year-old boy who was diagnosed with fragile X at the age of 5, after parental representations to medical profession, to establish reasons for his very demanding behaviour and delayed development. He is able to read five key words and can recognise his name and read numbers to five. He is engaged in pre-writing activities. Ben enjoys swimming and takes part in lessons and competitions for children with special needs. Ben is an example of a pupil at extreme end of the fragile X syndrome continuum. Chelsea is a 13-year-old girl who was diagnosed with fragile X at the age of 11, after the same diagnosis was confirmed for her brother. She is a shy, sensitive girl. She is a very good reader, but has difficulties with maths. The diagnosis of fragile X for Ben and as a consequence for his sisters unleashed a chain of events.
