ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the support staff guidelines for working with pupils. Support staff should avoid sitting next to the pupil at all times and collecting equipment for the pupil or putting it away. They must avoid letting the pupil become dependent on his/her support assistant and tolerating undesirable behaviour. Support staff avoid to making unrealistic demands on the pupil and making unnecessary allowances for the pupil. They avoid to working in cluttered areas. Support staff ensure work is at an appropriate level and is carried out with minimal support. They instead of encourage independent behaviour and work and give the pupil opportunities to develop choice-making skills by providing structure and restricted choices. Support staff provides a clear, predictable learning environment and they ensure that instructions are at the appropriate level and that goals are achievable. Support staff encourages the pupil to carry this out independently and ensuring that drawers are clearly labelled.
