ABSTRACT

This chapter will touch on the fundamentals of the present transatlantic strategic quandary as seen by groups of both Americans and Europeans. We will then turn to three critical tests for transatlantic commitment: joint military efforts in the ‘new warfare’ in Afghanistan; the fight against terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) proliferation globally; and the strategic divides between Europe and the United States revealed in the latest ‘crisis’, the Missile Defense (MD) debate, as well as Russia’s role in the latter. Success or failure in each area will be key to the future of the transatlantic tie, to the prospects for NATO or a NATO-like organisation to survive, and to stability in the medium term in the international community.
