ABSTRACT

This activity shows the simple principle of a hot air balloon. Only two forces are operating: hot air provides the lift, while gravity pulls the balloon down. The weight of the balloon keeps it from rising too high. Balloons are fun for children, and they can spend hours happily amusing themselves running with them, chasing them, and playing ball games with them. They are light and colourful and come in all shapes and sizes, but none is as spectacular as a hot air balloon. Balloon rides are generally considered unsuitable for under-sixes. The children are unlikely to be able to see over the side of the basket and so would soon become bored, also the burner is quite loud and spits out an extremely large flame, which would frighten many young children. However, someone in your community probably has been up in one, and they might be willing to come in and share their experiences.
