ABSTRACT
The story of Britain in the twentieth century is dominated by the two world wars. Although surviving to victory in both wars without the homeland being invaded by enemy troops, Britain was diminished from being the centre of a global empire to a mere nation state. The role it once held as the world’s superpower in the nineteenth century would instead be contested between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and their competing ideologies for world order in the age of the atom bomb.
