ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate some of the concepts presented in this book through a detailed case description. The case is based on material drawn from the authors’ clinical experience, combined and altered suffciently to protect the anonymity of individual offenders. In describing the case, a convicted child sexual offender who is due to appear before a parole board, a number of factors are considered that have the potential to infuence the offender’s ability to beneft from a treatment programme, such that his level of risk of reoffending is reduced. The chapter starts with a review of the history of the case, current criminal justice and clinical context in which the offender was assessed, before moving on to a consideration of the fndings of the initial assessment, case formulation and, fnally, treatment recommendations. This is followed by a discussion of treatment readiness, and how this might inform the development of an expanded case formulation and new treatment recommendations.
