ABSTRACT
It is a common observation that the rich in the eighteenth century were in many ways more civilised than they are now. They could quote Latin and Greek authors, they had considerable judgement in regard to Italian pictures, and they were usually acquainted with what was best in the literature of England, France, and Italy.
