ABSTRACT

Legend has it that the game of rugby was instantly ‘invented’ in 1823 by a student of Rugby School, England, a certain William Webb Ellis. In flagrant disregard of the conventional rules of football, he picked up the ball in his arms and ran with it to the amazement of his classmates. It is said that his teammates were so enthralled that they instantly followed suit and so the game of rugby was invented.
