Constantine, who had previously been suspicious of Maxentius, now made further preparations for the fight against him. Having gathered together forces from the barbarians he had taken prisoner, both German and from other Celtic tribes, as well as levies from Britain, a total of around 90,000 infantry and 8,000 cavalry, he marched from the Alps into Italy.
