ABSTRACT

I recognise many actors who live in my neighbourhood when passing them in the street, having seen their work in theatre, television or film. Most are not aware of me, even though I may have met some of them in a different context or place. There was one well-known actor who regularly walked down my street and we always nodded or said hello to each other whenever we met. I knew full well who he was, but he had not a clue about me. One night, when seeing a show at a drama school on the other side of London, I met my neighbour in the bar and he came over to say hello. I could tell he was surprised to see me there, ‘Are you a student here?’ he asked. ‘No, I am just here to see the show,’ I replied. ‘Well I hope you enjoy it,’ he said, and walked off. As far as he was concerned, I was an enthusiastic theatregoer who had travelled across London to see drama students in a show.
