ABSTRACT

In the case of our original questions, honesty and coolness will again pay dividends here. When asked what you have been up to, it is easy to give answers such as I have been on holiday, renovating my house, walking the dog, earning a living, etc., which may all be true but are not what the panel want to hear. Everyone knows this industry is far from easy and that the vast majority of performers are not in work fifty-two weeks a year, so, if you cannot bluff that you have been busy with projects about which the team won’t be able to catch you out, then be honest about it. A well-judged answer, such as ‘I have been going to as many auditions as possible, while keeping my skills up to date by taking regular classes’ will prove that you are doing all you can and are ready to get back to work. Some people back this up further with phrases such as it’s tough, or quiet, but this is really too much, as nobody wants their heart strings tugged, or to be made to feel worse if the job is not going to go your way. Be factual and as upbeat as you can – even if that means acting it.
