ABSTRACT

Furthermore, recent statistics on science and technology (S&T) activities in China show that China is achieving quite a lot even in S&T. For instance, a recent report of the OECD (2006) argued that China has overtaken Japan and ranked second (after the United States) in the world in terms of research and development (R&D) expenditure in 2006. This news, while reproduced globally (e.g. Financial Times 4.12.2006, 5.1.2007; Joongang Ilbo 5.12.2006; Korean Economic Daily 5.12.2006), seemed to have impressed most people and even frightened quite a few, reinforcing the already-popular opinion of ‘China threat.’
