ABSTRACT
What is it that is distinctive about urban health? Health is both an outcome and a determinant of economic development and in this way must be associated with urbanization. But when considering health in cities and rural villages, can one identify a distinctive urban health profile, or are the urban/rural differences less a matter of kind than of degree? In what ways are the concepts of urban diversity and social–spatial proximity reflected in health?
