ABSTRACT

This is perhaps one of the simplest but most effective activities for reinforcing understanding about the value of numbers. However, the first objective here is for children to learn how to organise their counting: many children count in a haphazard way – for instance, in adding a series of 2p and 1p pieces, they may not think of separating the different coins and piling them into easy amounts such as 10p piles. Quite often they may try to count 1p, then 2p, then another 2p and so on. This may work for them with small numbers, but with larger numbers and a greater range of coins, errors will creep in.
