ABSTRACT

This study of the Northern Soul Scene, while focusing on a unique phenomenon, offers a number of useful insights for understanding involvement in subcultures and other groups formed around delinquent, prohibited or stigmatised conduct. While I attempted to capture a full range of actions and experiences that made up the 1970s Scene, the emphasis has been to use these observations to help explain the delinquent action. At a general level, this followed my interest in the way the beliefs of people with anti-drug attitudes, and no prior history of delinquency, were changed through their participation in the Scene.
