ABSTRACT

This chapter turns to the amphetamine culture of the Northern Scene and the ways that people became amphetamine users. The first part of the chapter draws on the notion of homology (Willis 1978) to set out the mid-Seventies context for amphetamine use on the Northern Scene. This context is crucial to the subcultural construction of the amphetamine ethos that formed a central element of the Scene.1 Some of these themes, and the context setting, have been covered earlier, though not specifically in relation to the drug culture of Northern Soul.
