ABSTRACT

The dialogue above is between one of my informants, Risa (35) and her husband, Ramli (37). Risa rejected her husband’s polygamous marriage, and preferred divorce to sharing Ramli with another woman. Her high level of education, her economic independence and her contextual approach to the Qur’anic verses dealing with polygamy all seem to have contributed to her determination to seek a divorce (her case study will be discussed in more detail later in this chapter). The quotation above shows how careful Risa was in expressing her dislike of Ramli’s polygamous marriage. It is clear that she does not wish her opposition to polygamy to be judged as opposition to Islam – a fear shared by many of my informants.
