ABSTRACT

The female reproductive organs are essential to a woman’s health and fertility. Gynaecological emergencies require prompt diagnosis and treatment to preserve organ function. Elective or emergency surgery may be necessary, resulting in loss of part or all of the reproductive system. Nurses should be aware of the impact this has on emotional and sexual well-being, as well as physical health. This chapter outlines common acute gynaecological events and how to provide effective nursing care to women experiencing:

n haemorrhage in early pregnancy – ectopic pregnancy rupture and miscarriage;

n haemorrhage due to non-pregnant conditions – menorrhagia (heavy periods) and gynaecological malignancies;

n pelvic infections; n post-operative complications.
