ABSTRACT

Nurses are constantly reminded to adopt a holistic perspective when performing their role. This holistic viewpoint includes considering the family members within the context of care. The importance of the role played by family members is an established one. The effects of the individual’s illness constitute an important part

of family life, and are closely related to the health status of its members (Keyes et al., 2002; Jubb and Shanley, 2002). The family can become a significant source of information about the patient. This chapter explores the role of the family within the context of acute care and conflicts will be identified through an exploration of the literature. Most available research relates to patient’s/relatives’ experiences within the intensive care environment. However, the findings can be seen to be transferable to experiences within general care areas. Nonetheless, there is a need for research data related to the needs and experiences of relatives of the acute/critically ill patient within the acute care environment.
