ABSTRACT
Patients’ medical and social history may suggest liver disease, although they may also deny or moderate risk factors such as alcoholism or sexually transmitted diseases. Recent foreign travel may have exposed them to viral hepatitis. Death from liver failure is usually caused by either
n cerebral oedema progressing to herniation of the brainstem into the spiral column (coning);
n overwhelming sepsis (Krumberger, 2002).
