ABSTRACT

Why do we cooperate on spatial planning across national borders? Why is spatial planning needed at the European level? Every chapter in this book contributes in some way to finding answers to these simple but rather awkward questions. Some answers are straightforward; others are more involved. Rarely are they uncontested, and inevitably they beg questions about the very nature of ‘European spatial planning’. Arguments about whether there is need for spatial planning at this scale are often intertwined with competing views about its role and scope.
