The European dimension of spatial planning has emerged in incremental tentative steps over many years. This chapter presents a brief chronology of the emergence of European spatial planning, setting this in the broader context of the evolution of the EU. The major events in the history of the EU and European spatial planning are compared in Table 14.1.
