ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how you can get support and help with producing your dissertation. It looks specifically at the ways in which your dissertation supervisor (your institution may use a different name such as ‘adviser’ or ‘tutor’) can support you and your project and how you can make best use of the different kinds of feedback you will get from your supervisor. The chapter also considers other forms of support you could actively seek out, including that provided by staff in your library, peer and group support. By the end of this chapter, you should have a better understanding of the following:

• the role of the supervisor; • your role in the relationship and ideas about becoming an autonomous

learner; • how to make the best use of feedback from your supervisor; • other forms of support that may help you on your dissertation journey.

Although there are many ways to supervise a dissertation, there are some general things that can be said about the supervision process and the relationship between the student and the supervisor.
