ABSTRACT

This book has mainly exp lored three issues: community crime prevention, social capital, and the nexus between community crime prevention and social capital. The exploration has been pursued at two levels: theoretical and empirical. At the theoretical level, the literature in the West concerning community crime prevention and social capital was reviewed extensively, and the theoretical link between them was established. At the empirical level, the data from Shenzhen were employed to demonstrate to what extent the nexus could be maintained. In this chapter, first the theoretical and empirical explorations are summarized. Then, the issues pertinent to the nexus between social capital and community crime prevention are revisited, including formal/informal social control, public/private control, inclusion/exclusion, and the role of the state. Finally, the issues about the future direction of social control and its study in China are examined.
