ABSTRACT

Transnational corporations (TNCs) generate around 80 percent of international investment, the driving force of the global economy. Recently, they have been joined by sovereign wealth funds, holding a total of about $2 trillion. These are the investment portfolios of national governments, created out of the surplus income from oil extraction and other exports. Concerns about the political influence of the major TNCs may in the future be joined by worries about the economic and corporate influence of some governments.
