ABSTRACT
Freedom of the press and news media is an essential element of a free society. Nowhere is the press perfectly free, and arguably nor should it be: most liberal societies agree that hate speech should be restricted. But when information and opinion critical of the state cannot be published, citizens’ freedom is at risk.
