ABSTRACT

Worldwide, people are eating more meat, dairy products and sugary foods, and their weight is increasing as a consequence. Even in countries where the majority of people are undernourished, those who can afford it are over-eating, their extra flesh often seen as a prestigious indication of their wealth. In rich countries, cheap processed foods are high in animal fats and sugars, so a poor diet is more likely to lead to weight gain. Obesity leads to an increased risk of several serious diseases. The likely consequences are serious, not only for the individuals concerned but for society as a whole as health services struggle to cope with the increased strain.
