ABSTRACT

Palestinians form the largest single group of refugees in the world, constituting by themselves more than a quarter of the world's total of cross-border refugees, and about one tenth of the total number of people who have been made homeless by war. Among Palestinians living in the Middle East, refugees account for almost half of the total. Jordan remains host to the largest number of Palestinian refugees and large numbers also went to, and have remained in, Lebanon and Syria. Iran has hosted very large numbers of Afghan refugees during the years of foreign intervention and civil war since 1979. The international comparisons on this map use data from a different source than the figures for Palestinian refugees. They come from the UN Relief and Works Agency, which offers figures only on Palestinian refugees. The term 'refugee camp' has become a misnomer with its implication of impermanence.
