ABSTRACT
Drugs and alcohol may cause criminal offences to be committed by virtue of being traded or consumed (as when illegal drugs are imported or where a person assaults another while drunk), but they may also catalyse crime (such as theft) by individuals who are seeking to pay for the drugs or alcohol to which they have become addicted – so-called secondary crime.
