ABSTRACT

Over the years there have been many claims about the relative importance of the contributions nature (what children inherit) and nurture (how they are supported in their environment) make to their development. Those who favour the first stance argue that gifted children inherit ‘a propensity to do very well’, and they ask if there is a gene for genius! The environmentalists, however, ask how these researchers have obtained data to justify such a claim, given that the pre-natal environment is affecting the baby even before it is born.
