ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the fragmented regulatory environment in Australia and the influence it has on sustainable urban design management. Regulations, especially their interpretation and consistent application, are a fundamental issue for all development projects and the ability to manage design through the early development approval phases is an important task for design managers. Continuing with the theme of early project stages, the chapter addresses the public procurement of architectural services in Sweden. It highlights the need for better selection methods among public clients and tends to imply the need for design managers to persuade their clients to better reward sustainable design practices. The chapter investigates how materials and products with sustainable credentials are marketed to specifiers. Scrutinizing advertisements in a select number of publications helped to reveal a number of shortcomings with how green products were promoted, which could possibly hinder their uptake.
