ABSTRACT

During the 2000 presidential election, a split in the KMT had Lien Chan and James Soong leading different camps that, in the end, handed victory to Chen Shui-bian and Annette Lu of the DPP with 4,977,697 or 39.3 per cent of the votes to become the tenth president and vice president of the Republic of China. This was both the first time that the ROC underwent a transfer of political power and the first time that a president had been elected into office by a minority vote.
