Towns and Industry

Nepal is one of the least urbanized countries in the world. In 1981 just over six per cent of the population lived in the 23 towns, defined as settlements with a population of at least 9,000. In recent years however, urban growth rates have accelerated – the number of urban dwellers more than doubled between 1971 and 1981. The current doubling rate continues to be about nine years.
