ABSTRACT
The dichotomy between hierarchy and network discussed in the preceding chapter requires further nuancing. Many organizations are hybrids: they have the features both of a network and of a hierarchy. This means that both hierarchical strategies and network strategies are used. Of course, this may create tension. This chapter describes this tension (Section 7.2) and sets out how it can be dealt with (Section 7.3).
