The Context of Change In the last years of the twentieth cenrury, change seems to be accel· erating. Most ages have their contemporary historians who see themselves living through times of exceptlonally rapid and potentially catastrophic change, often mOTe rapid and acute than ever before; and change is a natural condition of physical, biological and social systems. But the late 19905 really do seem to be different.
