ABSTRACT
’Unfortunately, there was no direct equivalent for global warming of the dramatic discovery of the ‘ozone hole’ over the Antarctic. The fact that seven of the ten years in the 1980s were amongst the warmest since records began, and that there were unexpected droughts in the USA and severe storms around the world in 1988, lent warnings about global warming a popular credibility that they had previously lacked.’
