ABSTRACT
This book comprises contributions to the concluding conference of the largescale, multidisciplinary project ‘Citizenship and Democratic Legitimacy in the European Union’ (CIDEL). The project was supported by the European Commission under its Fifth Framework Programme and lasted for three years – 2002-2005. From its inception in November 2002 onwards, the programme engaged nine partners from six European countries, and it was co-ordinated by ARENA at the University of Oslo.1
