ABSTRACT
This chapter brings together the research findings presented in the previous three chapters to consider what they mean for community penalties. Its key concern is whether a communicative theory of punishment offers a promising approach for community penalties and if so how the relevant processes and material forms of these sanctions might be developed to bring out their full communicative potential. In addressing that question, the chapter takes account of recent developments and initiatives relating to community-based interventions.
